Why is Djokovic Plant based but not Vegan?

I’m dabbling in plant based diets my self and I read and hear a lot about Djokovic being a vegan and so on. A lot has been said around his diet and lifestyle. One thing is for sure, he doesn’t want to be called vegan:

»I don’t like the labels, to be honest. I do eat plant-based (food), for quite a few years already. But because of the misinterpretations of labels and misuse of labels, I just don’t like that kind of name.«

Let’s take a look at the »official definition« of veganism:

»Veganism is a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose.«

Vegan

Djokovic uses natural gut strings made of natural cow gut.

Being vegan is more than just a diet. Djokovic uses natural gut strings made of natural cow gut. So by definition, he can not be a vegan, but he can still eat plant-based. I think if he ever called himself a vegan, he would be castigated by the vegan community. I’m not saying he does everything else »by the vegan book«, but using natural gut is pretty obvious something they would not approve.

There you have it. A simple explanation if he is a vegan or not.
